Do you know…there are several Canadian symbols dispersed across the beautiful CIS campus? Can you guess what they are?
Following our Maple Leaf Spirit feature (Click here to read), we’re taking you on a CIS Canadian Culture Treasure Hunt! Can you guess where this canoe is?
If you said that it is in the School lobby, you guessed right! Walking through the grand entrance of the Canadian International School of Guangzhou, the first thing you’ll see on the ceiling of the lobby is an upside-down canoe! That is a pretty unusual feature to have in a school building. Why is it there?

In Canadian history, the canoe is a symbol of identity. Canadian aboriginals and European settlers used canoes to explore and discover all that Canada had to offer. There are numerous bodies of water that dot the Canadian landscape. The canoe was the country’s original means of transportation, allowing the Indigenous people to take advantage of this unique environmental feature. Made with natural materials, the canoe provided freedom, gave rise to opportunity and fostered commerce. Men and women had to work together to overcome the obstacles they faced and to reach their destination. Canada indeed owes an enormous gratitude to the Indigenous people who created the canoe and shared their insightful knowledge of how to travel by water. Without the canoe, there would be no Canada.
At CIS, the canoe is strategically placed in the lobby so that it towers above us as we walk into the school campus. It vividly represents adventure, exploration and teamwork, skills that CIS aims to instill in all our students. It characterizes the pioneering and adventurous spirit of our community as they collectively move forward in their learning journey. Every time we look up to see the canoe, we can feel a renewed sense of adventure, understanding and discovery. And most of all, we remember our school motto: Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow.
